Help! My Drain has a Hair Clog

The most common type of drain clog is a hair clog. It’s an unfortunate occurrence that almost everyone has to deal with at some point. Even if you use a drain stopper, hair still accumulates in your drain lines and creates clumps that slow drains down drastically. The good news is that most hair clogs can be handled easily and soon your drain will be flowing again. Keep in mind that we do not recommend using chemical drain cleaners, as they can damage your lines.

First, remove all the hair from your drain that you can access by using a pair of needle-nose pliers. Dispose of this portion of the clog into a trash can. Don’t try to rinse it further down your drain.
Next, utilize a baking soda and vinegar mixture to create a chemical reaction within your drain. Make sure to let this solution sit in your drain for approximately 10 minutes before rinsing your sink with a hot cup of water. Take care not to burn yourself.

If your drain clog still remains, the removal and cleaning of the p-trap under your sink might be necessary. Make sure you have a bucket placed under the p-trap before removal, as it’s sure to be holding water. If you don’t feel comfortable with this step, or the clog still remains, then it’s time to call the professionals at Pipelining Northwest. Our team has over 60 years of experience in drain clogs and sewer backup and can help you get your drain flowing freely again!
